Krakow: Unique Atmosphere and Heritage
For centuries Krakow (also spelled Cracow) was the capital of Poland and its
largest city. Polish kings resided at the Wawel castle. It wasn't until 1609
when the royal court was moved to Warsaw and parliamentary sessions and the
elections of kings continued to take place at the new capital. However, Krakow
continued to be considered Poland's capital until the callapse of the First
Republic. As a result of losing its former status, Krakow suffered a deep crisis
in the 18th and 19th centuries.
